Why swap it
Regular soda is liquid sugar that skips your fullness signals entirely. Diet soda avoids the sugar, but newer research raises real questions about artificial sweeteners.
Best choices
These fit the Weigh to Stay approach: real food, with refined carbs and added sugar kept low.
- Zevia, if you're really craving soda. It's about the closest thing to soda you can get: sweet, fizzy, and it actually tastes like soda, much closer than sparkling water. It's sweetened with stevia and made with very clean ingredients. See it on Amazon →
- Plain sparkling water. The cleanest swap. Often it's the fizz and the cold can people miss, not the sugar.
- Sparkling water with real fruit. A squeeze of lime, lemon, or a few crushed berries.
- Homemade limeade or lemonade. Crystallized lime or lemon powder, a little stevia, and cold water, still or sparkling. Tangy, sweet, and refreshing, with no sugar.
- Unsweetened iced tea. Black, green, or herbal, brewed and chilled.
- Water infused with cucumber, mint, or citrus. Makes plain water feel like a treat.
In moderation
A little higher in sugar. Enjoy it now and then.
- Sparkling water with a splash of 100% juice. A spritzer gives you real fruit flavor with a fraction of the sugar. Keep the splash small.

Diet soda. It's sugar-free, but it's made with artificial sweeteners, and those don't belong in a healthy maintenance plan. Read what the research is finding →
Zevia
My favorite for anyone who misses soda. It has the fizz and the flavor of the real thing (cola, ginger ale, root beer, cream soda and more) with zero sugar and zero calories. It's sweetened with stevia, a plant-based sweetener, instead of the artificial sweeteners in most diet sodas.
True Lime
Crystallized lime in a packet. I mix it with stevia and water to make the most delicious limeade or lemonade. It tastes like summer, with no sugar at all.
Shopping tip
Keep sparkling water cold and easy to reach. If the fridge is stocked with something you like, the old habit fades much faster.
