Why swap it
Most bread, including most "wheat" bread, is refined flour that turns into blood sugar quickly. It digests fast, leaves you hungry sooner, and makes it easy to eat far more than you meant to.
Best choices
These fit the Weigh to Stay approach: real food, with refined carbs and added sugar kept low.
- Lettuce or collard wraps. Crisp, fresh, and almost no carbs. Great for burgers and sandwich fillings.
- Low-carb, high-fiber bread. Look for loaves where fiber makes up most of the carbohydrate. Check the fiber per slice.
- Egg-based or cloud bread. Made mostly from eggs and cheese, so it's protein-forward and very low in carbs.
- Portobello mushroom caps. Roasted or grilled, they make a hearty bun substitute.
In moderation
Better than the original, and a fine everyday choice. Just keep the portion reasonable.
- 100% whole-grain or sprouted bread. Much better than white bread, but still carb-dense. One or two slices is fine. It's a good everyday choice.
The specific brands I buy and use myself are coming soon.
Shopping tip
On the label, "wheat bread" means nothing. Look for "100% whole grain" as the first ingredient, and always check the fiber per slice.
