The Program › Step 5: Set your trigger weight and stay on the scale
Lesson 28 of 30

Here’s a comparison that’s helped a lot of people I’ve worked with over the years: managing your weight in maintenance is a lot like managing your finances.

You wouldn’t panic over one larger-than-usual purchase if you had a plan to cover it. You’d just make sure it got paid off before it turned into a real problem. Weight maintenance works almost exactly the same way.

Every indulgence is a balance, not a failure

Overindulging occasionally — a holiday meal, a vacation dinner, a celebration — isn’t a maintenance failure. It’s completely normal, and honestly, expected. The issue isn’t that it happened. The issue is what happens in the days after.

If you treat one indulgent day as the beginning of a new, looser normal, the balance keeps growing and gets harder to pay down. But if you treat it like exactly what it is — a single day that created a temporary surplus — it’s remarkably easy to correct.

How to actually “pay it off”

The day after an indulgence isn’t the time to panic-restrict or punish yourself with an extreme workout. It’s simply the time to go back to careful, steady eating and a bit of movement — a walk, your normal routine — and let your body do what it’s good at.

Most people find that one day of overindulgence, immediately followed by a return to normal eating, is fully absorbed within a few days. It’s stacking indulgent days back-to-back — or letting a “day off” quietly become a week off — that turns a manageable balance into real regain.

The mindset shift that makes this work

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s never letting the balance get large enough that paying it off feels impossible. Think of it as routine account maintenance, not crisis management — because that’s genuinely all it needs to be, if you catch it early.

The sooner you act after an indulgent day, the less work it takes to undo it. That’s not a scare tactic — it’s just how the math works in your favor, if you let it.

Your task before moving on

Decide now what you'll do the day after your next big meal out or holiday, and write it down, so the plan is already made.
